Suryakantham

Suryakantham was born on October 28, 1924 in Kakinada in East Godavari district. She reached Madras to become an actress. Initially she got the role a dancer in the film ‘Chandralekha’. Later on she did perform in the character role in the film ‘Narada Naradhi’. After that she got a role to play in the film ‘Gruhapravesam’. For the first time she did the role of a cruel mother-in-law in the film ‘Samsaram’.

The most famous film that is completely dedicated to her was ‘Gundamma Katha’ in which she played the title role. It was so great of her that the title of the was the title of the role in the movie even though the movie had stars like NTR, ANR, SVR, Savitri, and Jamuna. She was known for the natural performance and the ease in the dialogue delivery. She acted in more than 600 films.

Though she played the roles of cruel mother-in-law in movies, she was known for her sensitive nature. Suryakantham was married to an advocate Peddibotla Chalapati Rao. She was honored with Doctorate in Litterature by Sri Padmavati Mahila University. She died on December 18, 1994.
