S.P. Balasubramanyam Profile

Sripati Panditharadhyula Balasubramaniam (S.P. Balasubramanyam) was born on June 4, 1946 in Konetammapeta in Nellore district. His father SP Sambamurthy was famous Harikatha artist. He is a engineering graduate. In 1964, SPB won the first prize in a music competition for amateur singers organised by the Madras-based Telugu Cultural Organisation, and earned his first opportunity from music director SP Kodandapani. He is the elder brother of playback singer S.P. Sailaja and brother-in-law of actor Subhalekha Sudhakar. K. Vishwanath is his relative.

Before he became a full fledged cinema singer, Balu was the leader of a light music troupe that comprised of Anirutta, Ilayaraja, Baskar, and Gangai Amaran. Balasubrahmanyam made his debut in film music as a singer in 1966 with Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna. He has sung more than 39,000 songs since in more than 5 different Indian languages including Telugu, Tamil,Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam. He holds the Guinness record for having sung the most number of song recordings by any single male singer. He has also given voice for various artists like Kamal Haasan, Bhagyaraj, Mohan, Girish Karnad, Gemini Ganesh, Nagesh, Karthik, Raghuvaran, Vinodkumar etc. He also acted in a number of movies.

He produced four films Mayuri, Shubasankalpam, Bhamane Satya Bhamane, and Tenali. He received from Pottisreeramulu University in 1999 and Padma Sri Award in 2001.
